Maldon & District Constitutional Club Estd. 1908. THE Club is Open Normal Hours.

PRE 1908.

It is almost impossible for so many people to meet and, then decide too not only form, but register a “Club”, if they had not already known each other, even in part before. So it comes as no surprise that the previous organisation wanted premises of its own even if leased. Their existing rules did not allow this to happen. A new organisation, “Maldon and District Constitutional Club Ltd.”, was now in the making.” The date of this decision, to form a “Club”, is uncertain at this time, as is the name of the previous organisation. However, in his History and Guide Book, “Maldon and the Blackwater”, first calendar Tide Tables, entry June 1895, Alderman Fitch FLS. price 6d. lists all the Political Groups and Clubs in existence in Maldon and Heybridge. Constitutional Club is not listed. This constituting the Royal Borough of Maldon, first Royal Charter 1171 granted by Henry II. A Minute Book of “Maldon & Heybridge Conservative and Unionist Association”, shows “… meeting of the Current Committee was held at the Constitutional Club on Friday January 22 1908……” Was this one of the upper floors of 25 High Street? Above what was once Thomas Cooks Travel Agency, which occupied 23, 25 and 27 High Street. For information, 29 High Street is currently where the War Memorial is sited. In his book, Alderman Fitch FLS, lists the “Maldon & Heybridge Conservative and Unionist Association”, has headquarters, (just across Coach Lane), at the Blue Boar Hotel! More to follow!

The current building is the “fourth home” of our Club. But where did it all begin?
